The Fire Marshall is the designated person(s) within a company that is responsible for a number of tasks related to fire safety. Fire safety training is crucial to developing the understanding of this role for those who have been assigned it, and should be regularly updated to ensure they are on top of the situation and protecting lives.
The main duties of a Fire Marshall are to:
- Risk assess and identify any potential fire hazards in the workplace
- Liaise with the appropriate members of staff to work on fire prevention measures
- Report hazards and alarm faults to the appropriate person to fix them immediately
- Ensure all escape routes are clear at all times
- Inform all workers of their escape route and meeting point so that the correct action is taken in the event of a fire
In the event of a fire it is the Fire Marshall that has the responsibility of ensuring everyone leaves the building in a safe, orderly and speedy fashion. They are also responsible for turning off electrical equipment where possible, as well as searching rooms and areas to make sure everyone has left accordingly, finishing by taking a roll call at the designated, safe meeting point.
