Fire crews have tackled a huge blaze which broke out at a warehouse in Sussex on Tuesday (24th July).

The blaze broke out in the Sussex Skips building on the North Quay, Newhaven, just after midnight and lit up the local skyline.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a big pile of rubbish was alight and the fire was quickly spreading towards the warehouse.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue service managed to soon bring the fire under control but the hot weather ensured that it burned for longer than normal.

Sergeant Dave Tye from East Sussex CID said: “The cause of the fire is yet unknown and we will continue to work alongside our colleagues at East Sussex Fire and Rescue who are continuing with their forensic examinations at the scene today.”

A ‘suitable and sufficient’ fire risk assessment must be conducted on all commercial properties in England and Wales, under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

If the fire risk assessment is deemed to be carried out to an insufficient extent, the Responsible Person can face an unlimited fine or a prison sentence of up to two years.
